Break the chains of your comfort zone (exercises inside)

Would you happen to know why what I'm about to share with you is anything but trivial?

Because it tells a story of powerful transformation. And stories are powerful when they teach something that anyone can learn, without having to experience it firsthand.

This story begins in England, with a woman who had accomplished absolutely nothing by the age of 32.

Before then, this woman:

  • Lost her mother

  • Worked as an English teacher

  • Went through a divorce

Fairly common, sometimes dramatic. But it’s the reality of many people out there, right?

And that’s not all—she also struggled with financial issues and depression that made her consider ending her life.

Alone, broke, and depressed. If you were in her shoes, how would you have handled it?

Sure, you might have turned to a life coach—but back then, coaching wasn’t nearly as widespread as it is today.

I believe most people would’ve looked for a humble job just to scrape together a bit of money, hoping that maybe, years down the line, they’d get back on their feet... until they reach old age and ask themselves: “What have I done with my life?”

But this woman chose not to follow an ordinary path. She chose one of those “make or break” roads, as they say.

She found the courage to pursue one of her greatest passions: writing.

During a train ride from Manchester to London in 1990, she had the idea for a story and began working on it immediately.

Now, picture this: after finishing her manuscript, her book was rejected by 12 different publishers. A serious blow for someone already struggling.

But in 1997, she finally found a publisher willing to take a chance, only because the editor’s daughter fell in love with the story. From that moment, the book sold millions of copies worldwide and was translated into more than 10 languages.

As for the woman? She went from being a financially struggling single mother to one of the richest and most influential women on the planet.

You probably figured it out by now: the book is Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, and the mysterious woman behind it all is J.K. Rowling.

Rowling’s story is so powerful because it embodies the essence of transformation—something that every influential person in history has gone through.

It’s one of those stories that shaped me profoundly and led me to become a professional who spreads and inspires a desire for change, the kind of change that helps you grow.

I’m Filippo, and today I want to share with you all the tools to escape your comfort zone.

Comfort zone: how you get chained without realizing it

The so-called comfort zone is the first step toward failure.

And the curious thing is that many people enter it without even realizing it. That’s what makes it so dangerous: its invisibility.

The first step is to recognize the kind of life you're living. Ask yourself:

  • How did I get to where I am now?

  • Do I like it? Do I not?

  • If I don’t like it, am I doing anything to change it?

  • If I do like it, am I doing something to preserve it?

  1. Your answers may shock you—maybe because you’ve never asked yourself these questions before.

The comfort zone traps you the moment you switch your life to autopilot, when you stop noticing the days as they pass.

It’s that awful feeling you get every time you think:
    “Hang in there, tomorrow’s Friday.”

That’s it. If your only goal is Friday—or the last day before a holiday—you’re in chains.

    But it’s not your fault.

Society often pushes you to settle into a life you don’t truly like, one that you live half-heartedly just to meet other people’s expectations.

Now it’s your choice: are you okay with how things are, or are you more like Rowling, someone willing to change at all costs?

Why are we afraid to change

    Listen to this—it's truly chilling.

I once spoke with someone who came to me with this exact issue.

They were suffering because they hated their job, chosen only to guarantee a pension, and the stress was so intense that they’d chew every fingernail off their hands.

Here’s the absurd part: this person became so used to that life, they also got used to the suffering that came with it.

Soon, they started believing that suffering was normal.

This is the danger of the comfort zone: it can make you accept a miserable situation as normal, to the point you believe it’s right that way.

Our brain is a strange tool.

We fear change because the unknown scares us more than what we already know. Often, we perceive change as something negative that could make things even worse.

That’s why millions of people waste money on gambling—not because they think they’ll win, but because just holding that ticket gives them something to hope for.

The first time I truly understood this, I felt almost burned by the sheer stupidity of it.

But change is the only remedy to escape the abyss of the comfort zone.

    Don’t be afraid of fear

Have you ever truly asked yourself what’s stopping you from changing?

Let me quote J.K. Rowling again—specifically, a scene from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.

Harry is attacked by a Dementor, a creature that sucks all happiness from a person through its breath. It’s the symbol of fear itself.

But in this case, Harry isn’t facing a real Dementor, but a Boggart—a magical creature that turns into whatever someone fears most.

    Afterward, Professor Lupin tells Harry:
“I’m very impressed: it shows that what you fear most... is fear itself.”

Now ask yourself: Are you really afraid of changing your life, or just the idea of change?

Escape Plan from the comfort zone

Let’s be clear—not all comfort zones need to be destroyed. Everyone needs a few certainties in life, just enough to avoid falling into chaos.

The key is not to rely on those certainties too much. Because everything changes eventually, and if your life becomes one big comfort zone, even a minor shift will leave you completely disoriented.

That’s why I want to give you some powerful tools to help you escape your comfort zone, at your own pace.

    • Write: No, you don’t have to be the next J.K. Rowling. But writing is an incredibly powerful ally. Putting your emotions on paper can help you understand how you’re truly feeling.

    • Start a new habit: Instead of living on autopilot, change one small habit each day. It will increase your awareness of time and help you live more in the present.

    • Meet new people: Whether you’re looking for a soulmate or just someone interesting to talk to, meet people. Even the guy who cleans your building’s stairwell might inspire you in unexpected ways.

    • Travel: And I don’t mean a vacation. Sure, a week at a luxury resort sounds great—but real travel is about emotions and experiences. It can’t be measured by how much you spend. Experiencing new cultures opens your mind like nothing else.

    • Hire a life coach: As I said before, if Rowling had had the chance, she would’ve hired a professional coach to overcome her deep issues.

  2. That’s why the opportunity you have today is a rare one. Most people still don’t know they can choose the life that suits them, freeing themselves from the false beliefs that keep them stuck.
